Location: , , Florida
Description
White
Cane Safety should be practiced every day, but today our goal is to promote
public education how our visually impaired population live and work
independently while giving back to their communities.
It is important to remind everyone that at
times, crossing a street safely can be a feat in itself. For everyone. Sight or
no sight.
- What can
we do to ensure the safety and mobility of those who are visually impaired?
- We can
raise awareness of the white cane law, as we are doing today.
- We can remember
to come to a complete stop before turning right on red. And to look to the right for
pedestrians in the crosswalk or at the corner waiting to cross, not just to the
left for oncoming traffic.
- We can remember
that a person using a white cane or guide dog ALWAYS has the right of way.
We can remember to stop in advance of the stop bar, not in the crosswalk. Stopping inside the crosswalk may put visually impaired or any other pedestrian at greater risk by having to navigate around your vehicle.
Please make a commitment today to slow down and watch for all pedestrians, especially those with visual impairments.
Remember, Alert Today, Alive Tomorrow, Because Safety Doesn’t Happen By Accident!
